For this short week, I’ll be reading Blizzard to some of the lower grades and doing a book talk about The Kid From Diamond Street for the older grades. Blizzard is very appropriate reading this week with all of the snow we’ve had, but it’s also a fascinating picture book about the author’s experience during the New England blizzard of 1978. He and his family were snowed in for almost a week until he realized he might be the only one who could get to the store for needed supplies!
The Kid from Diamond Street is another Beehive Book nominee in the informational category. It’s the story of Edith Houghton, a baseball legend in the 1920’s who started playing on a professional women’s team in Philadelpia, PA by the age of 10! Edith was so good, she got to travel to Japan with her team at a time when very few people ever left their own state, let alone the country. She went on to play on other professional teams and eventually became a scouter for the Phillies. This is an informative and interesting book about baseball and an extraordinary girl. Students can vote in the library on this book after they read it.
