Welcome to the Upland Terrace Library! This page will help you stay current on our library happenings throughout the year. My name is Andrea LeBaron and I’m the media clerk at Upland. I love kids and I love books, so this is the perfect job for me! I work to make our library an inviting, safe and interesting place to be. I believe there is a book for everyone and love helping your kids find their books.
Each week I will post an update on what we are reading aloud in the library. I hope you will ask your kids about these books. You might even want to check them out at your community library. (They have multiple copies of Beehive Books and Battle books.) I usually only have 1 copy of a book, although there are many popular books with 2 or more copies. At Upland, Kids can also put books on hold first come first serve, which helps them get the book much quicker. I try to get books out as quickly as possible so everyone has something they want to read. Here’s to a great year of enjoyable reading!
Battle of the Books 2018-19
This year, Upland Terrace is taking part in the district-wide Battle of the Books competition. This is a voluntary program where students in 3rd – 6th grades are challenged to read as many books as possible from a list of 15 books assigned to their grade level. Students who read at least 5 books by Jan. 31, 2019 qualify to be on a team. We will hold a school-wide competition and the first and second place winners will go on to compete at the district level. Students can also earn a pin for every Battle book they read by filling out a summary sheet and passing the book off with me in the library. I am available Tuesday and Friday mornings in the library, 9-11 am for passing off books. For more information and a copy of the book lists, check out the Granite website here: https://sites.google.com/granitesd.org/battleofthebooks/home
Check out the Battle of the Books district incentives for December! Every student or staff member who reads 5 or more books by Dec. 18, 2018 is eligible for a prize drawing. Check in with me in the library for more details.
It’s time for Battle of the Books Book Club! I’m thrilled to be able to invite students to participate in our new book clubs. The purpose of Book Club is to have fun jumping into the books, discussing plot, character, setting and individual opinion about the books. It will also provide a great way to prepare to be on a team if students want to participate in the competition in Feb/March. But students don’t have to be on a team to participate. They can come for fun and friendship.
We will have three clubs: the 5th graders are currently meeting every Tuesday during lunch, 12:30 – 1 pm in the library with me. They can bring in a sack lunch and munch while we talk about the Battle books. Any 5th grader who wants to participate can come, just see me for a permission slip in the library.
The 4th grade book club meets Wednesdays 12:15 – 12:45 with me and Mrs. Chai in the library. Our first meeting is Dec. 19. Bring a sack lunch and come! Any 4th grader who is reading the battle books or just wants to be part of book club can come. See me for a permission slip.
Finally, the 3rd grade book club meets Thursdays 12-12:30 in the library with me. Bring a sack lunch and come to munch and talk about the Battle books. Our first meeting is Dec. 20th.
