What is the Battle of the Books Program?

The Battle of the Books program is a reading incentive program for students in 4th and 5th grade. Students are challenged to read as many books as possible from a list of 20 books. In order to qualify for a team, students must read at least 8 books by the beginning of February. There are prizes and incentives along the way. For example, If students read 8 books by Friday, Dec. 15, 2023 they qualify for the Christmas Cookie Reward party. If students would just like to read the books for fun and earn the prizes without participating in the competition, they are more than welcome to. The point of this program is to get kids reading!

Each time a student finishes a book, they will need to fill out a summary sheet so we know they read the book. This can be done on paper by printing out the summary sheet through the link below. OR students can log onto their google classroom and use the code: psuuykn to fill out and submit the summary sheet electronically. Once they pass off their summary sheet with Mrs. LeBaron or Mrs. Rooker they can collect their button in the library.

After passing off the books, students will receive a lanyard and a book button in the library. For each additional book students pass off, they will receive an additional button. The library will be open most weeks for Battle of the Book pass-offs – Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:15 -10:00 am and every day after school. If those times don’t work for your student, please have them talk with Mrs. LeBaron.

Battle of the Book Contest Details

Students who read at least 8 books by Feb. 1, 2024, will be eligible to be on a team. Teams have at least 3 but not more than 4 students per team. There are 4th grade teams and 5th grade teams, each with their own competitions. Students can be on a team with friends from other classes, but not other grades. We allow students to form their own teams and then do a little shuffling as needed. As a team, students will review the books and prepare for the school competition, which will take place in the Spring ’24, TBA.

Parents are also encouraged to read the books and form a parent team! We had our first ever parent vs. teacher team in the Spring ’23 and will plan on a parent competition again in 2024.
