January 3, 2020Library Happenings We’re jumping right back into our Beehive books with Not So Different, by Shane Burcaw. This is an awesome book written by someone with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Shane was diagnosed with SMA when he was 9 months old. It is a rare neuromuscular disease that prevents his muscles from developing properly. While SMA has had an enormous impact on his life, Shane says he tries to not let it define him. He is an author, sports fan, and blogger. He even co-founded a nonprofit, Laughing At My Nightmare, Inc. Today, LAMN is Shane’s full-time career. He travels the country speaking to kids and adults about the “power of positivity.” This book is an amazing way to understand Shane and get to know him, to see how someone with a disability is not so different from each of us.
