This week during library time, I am introducing the Battle of the Books Jr. program to all students in grades Kindergarten through 3rd grade. This is our 3rd year implementing this reading incentive program at Upland Terrace and participation has grown each year! The program is designed to help students try different types of books and reward them for reading and recording their progress. It is OPTIONAL, but we highly encourage participation and put a lot of effort into it. Students are asked to read 3 books of their own choosing for each category. The last week of the month is our record and reward day during library time. Students will bring their reading log to their class library time and a parent volunteer will give them their prize. For each cateogry they complete, students will get a pin to go on a lanyard and a small prize. We keep the lanyard and the pins at school until May, when each student who finishes all 10 categories will get to pick a new, free book. Everyone will get their lanyards and pins at the end of the year. Our first reward week will be Dec. 13, so students have 6 weeks to get started. Look for info packets with reading logs coming home this week!
