Kindness Changes the World!
This week we are focusing on how kindness can change the world. There are so many books about kindness, but these are some of my favorites. A new book that I recently added to our collection on kindness is The Notebook Keeper, by Stephen Briseno and Magdalena Mora. It’s the true story of a real-life notebook keeper at the San Ysidro Border checkpoint in Tijuana, Mexico. At this checkpoint, a refugee was chosen to manage the notebook, an unofficial ledger with the names of those seeking asylum. When new refugees arrived, the notebook keeper wrote down their name and country and gave them a number. Each morning, U.S. Customs agents notified the notebook keeper of how many refugees would be allowed to plead their case for asylum. Families often waited in line for weeks or months for their number to be called. The compassion and kindness of the notebook keeper was legendary. This system was discontinued when Covid closed the border. There’s an excellent authors note at the back of the book with more details.
