This week we are reading and voting on Headstrong Hallie! by Aimee Bissonette. This is a Beehive nominee in the informational book category for children. I love informational picture books – there are so many good ones that introduce kids to lots of amazing people they might not otherwise read about. Hallie Morse Daggett is one of them! Hallie was the first female fire guard, hired in 1913, to work for the U.S. Forest Service at Eddy Gulch Station in Northern California. Hallie had to apply multiple times before she was given a chance to prove herself. But under her careful watch, Hallie was able to spot over 40 forest fires her first year and saved thousands of acres from burning. She spent most of her time at the station alone, enduring terrific storms and the threat of wild animals. In all, Hallie worked 15 years for the forest service, dedicating her best years to preserving the nature she loved.
