In celebration of Black History month and as a Beehive Book nominee, we are reading Sulwe this week. Written by award-winning actress and producer Lupita Nyong'o, Sulwe is a #1 New York Times bestseller based loosely on the author's experience growing up with darker skin than anyone in her family or school. Sulwe just wants to be beautiful and bright. But a magical journey in the night sky opens her eyes and changes how she sees herself. ...

It's book fair time again in the library! Join us Monday and Tuesday 4-7 pm to check out all the offers from Scholastic. This book fair benefits all of our hard working teachers and allows them to purchase books through Scholastic dollars for their classrooms. You can also buy a book for your child's teacher and donate it to their classroom by putting it in their brown bag in the library. Many teachers have wish lists available to help you ...
Week of 1/31
This week we are reading the companion book to The Very Impatient Caterpillar, which won the Beehive Book Award last year. It was also our Upland Terrace school favorite! It's hard to resist the adventures of this little creature. In the first book he couldn't wait to get out of his chrysalis and emerge as a beautiful butterfly. It took a lot of patience to go from a caterpillar to a butterfly. Now, he's trying to catch up with a group of ...
Week of 1/24
I finally have my Beehive Book voting bulletin board up and it is so fun to track our progress reading and voting on Beehive Books. So far, our favorite picture book is When Pencil Met Eraser, with 317 votes! This week I am reading another Beehive Book nominee, The Box Turtle, by Vanessa Roeder. When little box turtle was born without a shell, his parents reassured him he was more than just a shell and they improvised with a brown box for his ...
Week of 1/10
This week we are reading It Fell from the Sky by the Fan Brothers. This author/illustrator sibling duo puts out the most beautiful combination of artwork and story - we have their other books here in the library and they are likewise wonderful. Students love to check these out. In this newest story, a small bouncy ball falls from the sky into a garden. We get the perspective of the insects, who say this is the most amazing thing they've ever ...
Week of 1/3
Welcome back to school this first week of January! I hope everyone had a wonderful winter break, I sure did. We are starting the new year this week with the Beehive book nominee Snail Crossing, by Corey R. Tabor. Snail is determined to get to the plump, ripe cabbage on the other side of the road. But that won't be easy, especially for a slow snail crossing a busy street. But snail makes some very useful friends who come to the rescue, just ...
Week of 12/13
Since this is the last week of school before winter break, I am giving the students the chance to vote on which book we read in their class for story time. Some classes are choosing the sequel to the classic reindeer tale, while others are going with the tried and true 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. And some classes just love Grumpy Monkey's take on the holidays. We have the smell of pine in the library and Christmas music playing while ...
Week of 12/6
This week we are reading a delightful Beehive Book nominee called In A Jar, written and illustrated by Deborah Marcero. Llewellyn is a bunny who likes to collect all kinds of things in jars. Not just ordinary things, like shells or feathers, but sounds, sunsets and stars. One night when Llewellyn is collecting a sunset that looks like tart cherry syrup, he meets another bunny names Evelyn, and he gives a jar of the sunset to her. They become ...
Week of 11/30
From the zany, hilarious mind of Adam Rex comes this book I just ordered for the Library, On Account of the Gum. Anyone who has ever had gum in their hair or tried to get gum out of someone else's hair will relate to this funny picture book. It's a case of one failed solution leading to another until finally, someone has to yell "Stop!" But what DOES get the gum out?! We'll find out and let you know! ...
Week of 11/22
This is a short week in the library, with classes coming just Monday and part of Tuesday. But we are celebrating the spirit of Thanksgiving by reading this delightful book by Oge Mora titled Thank You, Omu! In a quick note to the reader, Mora says "Omu" is pronounced AH-moo and means "queen" in the Igbo language of Nigeria. This book is based on the author's memories of her grandmother's cooking and open door. Everyone dreams of a taste ...
