Betrayal, imprisonment, revenge, magic…
And that’s just the first scene of The Tempest, performed at Wasatch and Decker Lake Youth Centers this past Tuesday and Wednesday by the renowned Utah Shakespeare Festival (USF) touring company.
Students experienced the intricacies and intimacy of a live stage production as the USF Shakespeare players took on the roles of a banished Duke, scheming brothers, fairies, monsters, and, of course, star-struck lovers. Following the production, our incipient Thespians participated in workshops on improvisation, Shakespeare text, and stage combat (everyone’s favorite).
After the full day event, students expressed their gratitude to the players, with comments of “I did not think it would be this interesting,” “You taught us that Shakespeare is good stuff,” and “Can you come back?”
As part of USF’s educational program, Shakespeare in the Schools brings the Bard’s plays to schools throughout the Intermountain West, with sixty-seven performances for more than 120 schools.
