Soon the students at Decker Lake Youth Center will be playing an active role in the conservation of the monarch butterfly, which is close to being designated an endangered species. This is a joint effort sponsored through the University of Utah’s STEM Community Alliance Program (STEMCAP), Utah State Board of Education and science teachers Lisa, Decker Lake, and Kathy, Genesis Youth Center.
The program kicked off on April 11th with an introductory presentation regarding the monarchs, their life cycle and reliance on milkweed during the critical developmental stages of its life cycle. There will be six more sessions: the greenhouse and planting the milkweed seeds, migration routes and disturbances, pollination, current research and flight stamina of the monarch, horticultural plant species in Utah and careers in horticulture, and culminates with the outdoor planting of the milkweed seeds! The students had numerous questions and are excited about this unique opportunity.
We look forward to seeing a beautiful group of orange and black flutter away from Decker this summer!
