The job of a Restorative Justice Advocate (mentor) is more encompassing than one may believe. Our mentors search for opportunities to address the needs of the students they serve, sometimes going above and beyond the normal scope of their job description.
One of the YESS Mentors has been working with a student who struggles with anxiety and depression and thus with school. This student has expressed an interest in studying animation in college. The mentor contacted a local university and arranged a “field trip” for the student to meet with the department chair, tour the facility, meet with those currently studying animation, and discuss potential opportunities.
This kind act of reaching out beyond the norm on the part of the mentor, has impacted this student in a remarkable way and has brought a “sparkle” back in their life and attitude.
