Graduate students at Decker Lake Youth Center painted a mural in the graduate classroom with the assistance of Roger Whiting. They started in February and got in so far on it when the students expressed that they didn’t like what they were painting. Roger worked with them to come up with an different idea that represented the students. The theme is “Stepping into the Galaxy of Possibilities”. In the middle is a cell door opening out to the light meaning that one day they will all move on from where they are. They included the mountains that are a focal point of the Salt Lake Valley. The Maverick Center that is down the street from Decker Lake was included as well as the State Capitol Building. A Native American student sketched and painted the petroglyphs from sources of actual petroglyphs. The mural was finished in about two weeks.
The success of the mural is attributed to the students hard work, Roger Whiting for guiding the students, Stephanie Sinju who coordinated and provided space for the mural and Jason Rosvall who coordinated the project funding. Attending the unveiling were people from the Department of Justice in Washington D.C. and representatives from the Juvenile Justice System in Utah.
Below is a video of pictures taken at the unveiling with two students who explain the what the mural means to them.
