The objective was for students to learn about raptors. HawkWatch International brought two eagles in to help students understand how humans impact and change the natural environment and how it effects the lives of these eagles.
Students learned about Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) an insecticide used in agriculture which was banned in the United States in 1972. DDT stays in the environment for a long time and each of us have DDT in our systems. Older people more so than younger do to the ban that is in affect. The Eagles like us are exposed by eating, breathing or touching products that are contaminated with DDT. The side affects can be devastating for eagles.
Students learned how to identify the difference between a Golden Eagle and a Bald Eagle. The different environments that they live in and the differences in how they hunt for food.
