Warren Pettine an Associate Professor from the University of Utah Huntsman Mental Health Institute, and Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute cam to DSI/Gemstone and talked with students about AI and how it works. AI is only as good as the person that has programed it. Students participated in an activity where they taught the AI what a fish was. Then taught it to recognize different colors of fishes. They then were asked to teach the AI what a scary fish looked like which caused a discussion about what is scary to one person might not be to someone else. This is how bias is built into the AI. Students learned a lot and enjoyed the activity. Thank you STEMCAP for bringing Warren to our school.
