Hello Bonneville Families!
REMINDER…NO SCHOOL TOMORROW, FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 22ND. This is a comp day for Parent Teacher Conferences this week. We appreciate your support during this very busy week. Our amazing PTA fed our teachers and staff both nights and we greatly appreciate the time and efforts made by so many. Remember you can reach out to your teachers any time to connect with them about your student.
As we get more and more into the routine of school I need to remind you all about safety in the parking lot and the streets surrounding Bonneville. Drop-off and pick-up is always a very busy time at the school. If you are driving in a car, PLEASE slow down, be patient, and pay attention. We are all part of the Bonneville community and we need to respect one another while driving. Most of all we need to keep all our kids safe!
This upcoming week, September 25th–28th, will be our CONNECTION WEEK! We have planned advisory and lunch time activities that will equip students with skills to build more meaningful connections with others, develop empathy and emotional resilience, create more healthy habits, and harness the power of positive thinking. Current research shows that connectivity among adolescents is one of the most important components of mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing. Our children are well aware of the things they should NOT do when it comes to addiction, so this week we will talk about all the things they CAN do to PREVENT addiction and other mental health challenges: CONNECT. Connection is a strong antidote to harmful addictions, helps treat depression and anxiety and can be a powerful tool in suicide prevention.
Please review our fun schedule (attached to this email) and tell your student to dress in your best BONNEVILLE GEAR on Monday so that we can celebrate being STRONGER TOGETHER!
You can expect another email on Monday that will detail the rest of the week’s schedule, including advisory lessons and lunchtime activities. Please keep an eye out for that and make sure you share with your students!
Thanks,

More soccer and cross country next week. Cross country will be at Eisenhower Junior on Tuesday starting about 3:00 PM. On Monday, boys soccer will play at Bonneville and girls soccer will play at Evergreen Junior both games starting about 3:00 PM. Please remember to be positive and show good sportsmanship at all school events.
Please continue to work with and discuss openly with your students appropriate and expected behaviors. We are seeing an increase in vandalism in the bathrooms and extreme problems on some of our busses. The damage to the bathrooms and the amount of time it takes to clean up these messes forces us to close bathrooms during the week. These costs could be used in such better ways. As for behavior on the busses…this is a huge safety concern. If our bus drivers cannot operate safely, it puts others at risk. If your student violates bus expectations they will lose the privilege to ride the bus and parents/guardians will be responsible for transportation. Please be mindful that many can be impacted by the actions of one…so choose good behaviors!
Enjoy the long weekend!
Family and Community Engagement
WE NEED YOUR HELP! Our school is participating in a family engagement pilot project in partnership with the Utah State Board of Education and WestEd in which we are working together to increase student success, advance our school improvement efforts, and strengthen our family and community partnerships. As part of this pilot project, WestEd and the Utah Education Policy Center (UEPC) at the University of Utah are gathering information from our school staff, families, and students about how we are collaborating to support student success. This information will be gathered through surveys, focus groups, and a visit to our school. They will be sharing a summary of their findings with our school that will help us to improve our family and school partnerships throughout the year.
As part of this data gathering process, we are inviting you, the parents and guardians, to participate in a small group discussion about the school with a member of the WestEd/UEPC team. Below are the topics that you will be asked about:
- Experiences and preferences for how the school involves and communicates with you
- Communication with your child’s teachers
- Ideas for expanding school and family collaboration to support student learning
- Opportunities and needs for the school to support you as a parent/family member
- Experiences with the transition from elementary school to junior high and suggestions for improvement
- Expectations about the transition to high school and suggestions for what would best support your family in that transition
Your name (or your student’s name) will not be used in any report. Your responses to questions about the school will be entirely confidential. The discussion will take about 60 minutes, and interpreters will be available.
Discussions will take place in person at the school on Thursday, October 5th. The available times are: 7:50 AM, 9:50 AM or 1:00 PM. You will check in at the main office, receive a visitor’s badge, and then be directed to the location. If you are not available on Thursday, you can also sign up for a virtual discussion on Monday, October 9th or Tuesday, October 10th between 7:00am and 5:00pm.
If you would like to participate, please notify me, Jen Johnson (Principal), at jjohnson@graniteschools.org by Friday, September 29th, with the time slot you would be willing to attend and your primary language/interpretation needs. If you have any questions concerning the focus group, you may contact me at any time. Thank you for your cooperation as we strive to improve our school.
As part of this data gathering process, we would like to have your child participate in a small group discussion about the school with a member of the WestEd/UEPC team. Below are the topics that the students will be asked about:
- Perceptions of family participation in school activities or events
- Perceptions of family support for learning and teacher/family communication
- Experiences with the transition from elementary school to junior high and suggestions for improvement
- Expectations about the transition to high school and suggestions for what would best support them in that transition
Students’ names will not be used in any report. Their responses to questions about the school will be entirely confidential. The discussion will take about 30 minutes and will be scheduled to minimize disruptions to classroom activities. Approximately 30-40 students will be interviewed, this is NOT schoolwide.
You do not need to do anything further unless you object to your child’s participation in the discussion. If you object, please notify me, Jen Johnson (Principal), at jjohnson@graniteschools.org by Friday, September 29th.

Vehicle Day
We are so excited for our annual 6th grade career event, Vehicle Day. This year Bonneville Junior High School is holding Vehicle Day on Thursday, October 5th from approximately 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM.
Vehicle Day is a unique college and career awareness activity that teaches our students about different careers in a fun, interactive way. During this day we line the south parking lot with vehicles that represent a variety of different fields and have students rotate in groups to each vehicle to learn about careers related to it. In the past, for example, we have had police cars, fire trucks, hearses, city vehicles, professional athlete’s cars, construction machines, big rigs, and news vans.
We are still looking for more vehicles to join our event. If you are interested in displaying your career’s car and sharing with our students about your industry, please email Mrs. Stacy Wood at srwood@graniteschools.org.
We also need 8 parent volunteers to help chaperone groups of students around the parking lot. Please sign up at this link HERE.
