Hello Bonneville Families!
Thank you for another great week at Bonneville. There is A LOT of information below so please make sure to read! Thank you to our counseling team and our school social worker, Ms. Shively, for all their work on Connection Week. Ms. Shively has shared a message below and your students have received a challenge for the weekend to “Come Up For Air!” I hope you will encourage them to participate. Fall is my absolute favorite time of year and the weather is perfect. I hope you can enjoy a wonderful weekend with friends and family.
Tuesday, October 3rd at 1:00 is our PTA meeting. Anyone is welcome to attend this meeting and we are happy to have you here. Please check in at the main office and then join us in Room 101.
Next Friday, October 6th will be our PBIS Viking Way Celebration. Your students have been working hard all of September to earn their stamps, complete their tasks, and show how they can be Respectful, Responsible, and Ready to Learn. We have invited El Jaripeo Taco Truck and our LIA students have been working hard on activities to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. At lunch on Friday, those students that have met the PBIS task requirements will earn a free lunch from the taco truck! Purchasing lunch from the taco truck will be available to all students, but they will need to bring some money in order to purchase a lunch. As always, school lunch will be available and purchasing from the taco truck is NOT required.
Our final soccer games and cross country meet are next week. Cross country will be at the Cottonwood Complex on Tuesday starting about 3:00 PM. On Monday, girls soccer will play at Bonneville and boys soccer will play at Olympus Junior. On Wednesday, boys will play at Bonneville and girls will play at Churchill Junior. Both games start about 3:00 PM. Please remember to be positive and show good sportsmanship at all school events.
Our annual Talent Show (assembly November 7th) and Fall Festival will be held Wednesday, November 8th. Save the date for this amazing community event! If your student is interested in sharing their talents with our Bonneville community, have them pick up an application in the main office beginning on Monday. Auditions for the Talent Show will be held October 10th and 11th after school. I was blown away last year by all of the talent in our school. Please encourage your students to share their talents.
I truly appreciate all the support we receive every day. This is such an incredible community to work with. Thank you for making Bonneville such a great place.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Connection Week
Dear Bonneville Parents,
Yesterday we wrapped up our Connection Week! I want to applaud our fantastic student body. We have a wonderful group of students at Bonneville this year! They were respectful and engaged, and our Student Leader team, composed of the SBO’s and Peer Leadership team were incredibly responsible.
Yesterday, students were taught a little saying to help them be more conscious of how their screens are making them feel.
Be Aware. Don’t Compare. Come Up for Air!
1 – Be aware of how your screens are making you feel. So much of what our teens are consuming is negative. And it comes at them fast, even if they aren’t looking for it.
2 – Don’t compare yourself with others or fall into the trap of thinking you are less than others or that your life isn’t as cool and exciting as everyone else you follow. Social Media photos are simply highlight reels, edited and filtered to look glossy and cool. Studies show that if parents take away phones or social media altogether, kids feel even more excluded and isolated. But! There are definitely healthy limits that can be set. Studies indicate that teens do okay during the first 15 minutes of being on social media, but after 15 minutes, the majority of teens report feeling worse about themselves.
3 – Come up for Air. This can include setting time limits on apps, monitoring how long you spend on devices, establishing good tech habits, good sleep patterns, and making sure your days are filled with positive activities that include exercise, sunshine, socializing in person, and getting out of doors. A good standard to follow is the American Academy of Pediatrics, which recommends no more than 2 HOURS of (non-productive) screen time a day. But guess how many hours most teens spend per day, just on their phone? More than 7 HOURS! This whopping amount of time on screens correlates strongly with the highest numbers of anxiety and depression we have ever seen among teens.
In an effort to help students explore their own screen time habits, all of Bonneville was invited to participate in our Weekend Come Up for Air Challenge. We challenged students to go without 1-3 screen apps or devices. These include instagram, snapchat, other social media, netflix, youtube, disney plus, hulu, other streaming platforms, and any gaming devices. If students can go without “screens’ from Friday the 29th until Monday the 2nd and bring in their signed paper, they will be given a reward during Advisory! There is an option to write a reflection which will earn them more insight and rewards.
Students should have been given a challenge paper and reflection form at school, but click here to print one out if needed. To receive a prize, students must return this to school on Monday, October 2nd and have it signed by themselves and a parent.
A ginormous thank you to all our parent volunteers and the PTA who made this week happen. They made lunch activities so fun and successful! And a big thanks to Bonneville teachers and administration who were so helpful and supportive in making this week happen.
Thanks for all your support at home! And thanks to all our students for making Connection Week so meaningful!
Please let us know if you have any questions, suggestions or feedback by emailing our social worker, Julia Shively at jsshively@graniteschools.org.
Many Thanks!

Family and Community Engagement
WE NEED YOUR HELP! Our school is participating in a family engagement pilot project in partnership with the Utah State Board of Education and WestEd in which we are working together to increase student success, advance our school improvement efforts, and strengthen our family and community partnerships. As part of this pilot project, WestEd and the Utah Education Policy Center (UEPC) at the University of Utah are gathering information from our school staff, families, and students about how we are collaborating to support student success. This information will be gathered through surveys, focus groups, and a visit to our school. They will be sharing a summary of their findings with our school that will help us to improve our family and school partnerships throughout the year.
As part of this data gathering process, we are inviting you, the parents and guardians, to participate in a small group discussion about the school with a member of the WestEd/UEPC team. Below are the topics that you will be asked about:
• Experiences and preferences for how the school involves and communicates with you
• Communication with your child’s teachers
• Ideas for expanding school and family collaboration to support student learning
• Opportunities and needs for the school to support you as a parent/family member
• Experiences with the transition from elementary school to junior high and suggestions for improvement
• Expectations about the transition to high school and suggestions for what would best support your family in that transition
Your name (or your student’s name) will not be used in any report. Your responses to questions about the school will be entirely confidential. The discussion will take about 60 minutes, and interpreters will be available.
Discussions will take place in person at the school on Thursday, October 5th. The available times are: 7:50 AM, 9:50 AM or 1:00 PM. You will check in at the main office, receive a visitor’s badge, and then be directed to the location. If you are not available on Thursday, you can also sign up for a virtual discussion on Monday, October 9th or Tuesday, October 10th between 7:00am and 5:00pm.
If you would like to participate, please notify me, Jen Johnson (Principal), at jjohnson@graniteschools.org by Tuesday, October 3rd, with the time slot you would be willing to attend and your primary language/interpretation needs. If you have any questions concerning the focus group, you may contact me at any time. Thank you for your cooperation as we strive to improve our school.

Vehicle Day
We are so excited for our annual 6th grade career event, Vehicle Day. This year Bonneville Junior High School is holding Vehicle Day on Thursday, October 5th from approximately 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM.
Vehicle Day is a unique college and career awareness activity that teaches our students about different careers in a fun, interactive way. During this day we line the south parking lot with vehicles that represent a variety of different fields and have students rotate in groups to each vehicle to learn about careers related to it. In the past, for example, we have had police cars, fire trucks, hearses, city vehicles, professional athlete’s cars, construction machines, big rigs, and news vans.
We are still looking for more vehicles to join our event. If you are interested in displaying your career’s car and sharing with our students about your industry, please email Mrs. Stacy Wood at srwood@graniteschools.org.
