I'm so excited to be able to read Creepy Crayon! this week. Our students love the other two books in the series, Creepy Carrots and Creepy Underwear by Aaron Reynolds, illustrated by Peter Brown. With Halloween just a week away, it's got all the creepy vibes we like in the library! Jasper Rabbit is not a great student. He needs help with math and spelling. But when the purple crayon shows up, it magically helps him ace his spelling and math ...
Week of 10/10
This week I'm reading Goodnight Butterfly, by Ross Burach to grades K-2. This is a companion book to The Very Impatient Caterpillar, which won the Beehive Book award a few years ago. It's one of our student's favorite books and always checked out! This time, Butterfly learns what "nocturnal" means from his friend Porcupine, and decides he wants to be nocturnal too. This drives Porcupine crazy! But he helps Butterfly find his inner calm and ...
Week of 10/3
This week we are kicking off a new year of reading Beehive Book nominees for 2023 with The Yawns are Coming by Christopher Eliopoulos. This picture book nominee is a fun look at what happens when two friends decide to stay up all night. Can they avoid the Yawns and other sleepytime creatures who set in as it gets later and later? I'm daring students NOT to yawn while I read this book! We'll vote on it in classes after we read it together. ...
Week of 9/19
It's Book Fair Time! We are so excited to be hosting the Story Cupboard Book Fair again at Upland Terrace. The quality and quantity of these books is unmatched - everyone will find something to love! We have 8 tables of pictures books, 3 tables of holiday books, we have fantasy, mystery, informational, graphic novels, early readers, early chapter books, Beehive books and books for Battle of the Books. A portion of the proceeds go directly ...
Week of 9/12
This week, grades 3-5 are learning all about the library computer system called Destiny Discover. When students want to browse our books online, they can use one of the library search stations to see what's new, what's available and what they want to read next. We are reviewing how to do a search, how to find a call number, and how to know if a book is on the shelf. Students will be able to use the 4 library computers for the rest of the year ...
Week of 8/22
WELCOME BACK! It's so great to see all of our students again, I missed you! I hope everyone had a wonderful summer. And a warm welcome to new students and parents joining our Upland community. I'm excited to get to know you. This week I am visiting each classroom to help everyone get excited about library time and preview what we can look forward to. For grades K-3, I am reading "Beach Toys vs. School Supplies," a perfect picture book to ...
New Battle of the Books!
We are so excited to announce the new 2022-23 Battle of the Books reading list for 4th/5th graders! We have been working on this list for the last few months and feel like there is something for everyone to love. Many of these books are Beehive Book nominees for this upcoming school year, and many are just amazing books we hope you'll enjoy. Our committee has read all of these books and can heartily recommend them. Feel free to get started over ...
Last week of school!
It's been a fantastic year in the library at Upland Terrace! I can't believe the year is over, but I know we're all excited for summer! I hope you will make summer reading part of your plans. The Salt Lake County Library system has a great program to keep kids excited and engaged with summer reading so they can earn rewards. Starting June 1, you can pick up a fun tracking sheet to help your kids record all the books they read. You can also ...
Week of 5/23
Last week, the Children's Literature Association of Utah (CLAU) announced the winners of the 2022 Beehive Book Awards. If you've visited our library, you know we spend all year reading and talking about these books. I read all of the picture book nominees to the kids and many of them read books in the other categories. We always vote as classes on the picture books and students can vote individually on any Beehive Book they read. After ...
Week of 5/9
This is our last week checking out books from the library - I can't believe the year is almost over! And May is also Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month, so I thought I would read a couple of books that fit this month. Both books help students appreciate the experiences of Asian Americans - their heritage, their desire to fit into American culture, and the insensitivity they sometimes face. Grades K-3 will hear the first story ...
