This week I am introducing Battle of the Books '19 -'20 to students in grades 3-5. Please watch for a permission slip and FAQ sheet about the program coming home this week. What an amazing year we had in the Upland Terrace Library! To celebrate National Library Week, (April 8 - 12) we are reading The Librarian of Basra, by Jeanette Winter.  This is the fascinating story of Alia Muhammad Baker, chief librarian of  the Central Library in Basra, a coastal city in Iraq.  The Iraqi invasion reached Basra on April 6, 2003, but with the help of friends and neighbors, Alia managed to rescue 70% of the library's collection before  it burned to the ground 9 days later.  The ...

April is National Poetry Month and this week is National Library Week!  There's a lot going on at Upland Terrace this week.  But to celebrate in the library, we are exploring all kinds of poetry, including concrete poems. In Wet Cement: A Mix of Concrete Poems by Bob Raczka, the kids love to see how these poems look like their subject. We're reading a poem about time that looks like a clock, and one about a balloon in the shape of a balloon.  ...
