Five girls from Genesis Youth Center’s Gemstone Unit recently took and passed the food handlers exam. Way to go, gals!
Beginning in November, students at Genesis Youth Center will have the opportunity to participate in a virtual reality forklift training and certification program. Daria, the Financial Literacy and Geography teacher, researched this opportunity and arranged for the training equipment and materials. Students who complete the training and pass the exam will receive this certification and have a marketable skill as they transition into the community and search for employment. Thanks, Daria!
Brenda, Social Studies teacher extraordinaire at Wasatch Youth Center, applied for and was granted a scholarship to attend a week-long workshop in Colonial Williamsburg last summer. What an awesome experience she had and has brought back resources and experiences to share with her students and other teachers.
YESS had three staff members present during the GSD Professional Development Conference the week before school started. Jason Rosvall, YESS Director, and Clay Pearce, Director of SafeSchools, and Ann Jones, YESS’s Lead Mentor, provided an overview of YESS and SafeSchools and the impact that the new legislative HB239 may have on the schools.
Pamela Hawker, music and English teacher at Genesis, conducted a workshop on integrating drums and drum circles into English.
Way to go YESS!
The graduation march played out at Girls Transition Center, Genesis, and Wasatch and Decker Lake Youth Centers the last week of school in May. There were 8 graduates from Decker, 2 from Wasatch, and one each from Girls Transition Center and Genesis. Congratulations to these hard working graduates and best wishes for the opportunities ahead!
Every 5 years we have the opportunity of experiencing the school accreditation process. After a year of preparation (only 6 mos for our new director, Jason) we had the pleasure of hosting the External Review Team from AdvancED for the past 2 days, meeting with our stakeholders and touring various YESS sites. And the results are…
Not only have we been recommended for accreditation, we received the highest overall score that the team members have ever seen; we were above average in all areas! Go YESS!
Thanks to all the teachers and support staff for your dedication and for the passion that you bring to your jobs in making a difference in students’ lives!
YESS teachers Mark, from Genesis Youth Center, and Joanna, from UNI Girls Transition Center, have entered teams in the Unbound Readathon 2017 sponsored by CEEAS. Teams receive bundles of books from Scholastic and compete against teams from other secure schools throughout the country. There is a weekly podcast with a spotlight on books, recognition of student reading accomplishments, a short reading from one of the books, and students can participate in a book trivia quiz, and much more! What a great opportunity for the YESS students! Thanks Mark and Joanna!
