YESS recognizes the importance of mentors in the life of YIC (Youth in Care) students. We utilize Check & Connect, a nationally renowned mentoring program, to meet our YESS students’ needs. Within this capacity, our advocates act as a liaison between the school and caseworkers, group home leaders, trackers, foster parents, and GAL (guardian at litem). They teach social skills, help with credit recovery and connect students to resources in their schools and communities.
How will the mentors be an asset to you?
- Assisting with the school enrollment/registration process based on each YIC student’s needs
- Advocating for students and teaching self-advocacy
- Complete Educational Court Reports to state officials
- Attend IEP, BIP, MTSS/SST and other school meetings regarding YIC students
- Early warning system at school, grades/attendance
- Connecting students with their school: clubs, teams, activities, etc
- Providing support to the school’s IEP team in coordination with the DCFS team and all involved parties, including foster parents, the caseworker, guardian ad litem, and biological parents
- Helping to access school personnel: counselor, administration, social worker, etc
- Attend CFTM to update the team on student’s academics, attendance, and behaviors
