District Message
We want to inform you about a disturbing trend that’s been gaining traction on social media. The trend is for students to take photos or video of another student in a bathroom stall or using the restrooms on campus and then send those photos or videos to other students through social media (mainly Snapchat).
Although the intent may be for a funny prank or joke, the implications are very serious and those actions of taking photos or videos of another student in a restroom
amount to sex crimes. Parents, we want to stress that the consequences of these actions are severe. Students engaging in this behavior will face school and district-level discipline and are subject to criminal sexual violations. Students taking photos or video in a restroom could face
misdemeanor or felony voyeurism charges. Students sharing these photos or videos could face felony sexual exploitation of a minor charges. This is not a joke or a funny prank. These are sexual crimes with real life consequences.
Let’s not forget the emotional distress these photos and videos cause victims. The embarrassment and shame can create lifelong effects for victims. The trauma from one of these incidents could lead a student to self-harm or take their own life. Our schools are safe spaces for all students and students should never have to feel unsafe or mistreated while at school.
Parents we need your help. Please have an open a frank discussion with your children about the consequences of inappropriately using digital devices and social media. We respectfully request that if you are unable to monitor your child’s smartphone and social media use, that you restrict access to it.
The best security system we have continues to be the eyes and ears of our students and parents who contact authorities when they see inappropriate behavior like this. Please remind your students that we need their help to keep our campus and community a safe place. They can anonymously report unsafe and inappropriate behavior using the SafeUT app on a mobile device or web or contact our police department at (801) 481-7122 to report issues. As always, students can reach out to a teacher or administrator for help with any concerns.
Student safety and well-being is always our primary concern. We thank you for your collaboration and support while we work to keep our students safe and happy.
Sincerely,
Granite School District
