Middle school counselors wear a lot of hats! Their role is to support students’ academic success, emotional well-being, and social development during a time of big changes.
🎓 ACADEMIC SUPPORT
- Help students set academic goals including holding individual CCRP (College and Career Readiness Planning) meetings with student and parent/guardian
- Help with time management and organization skills
- Create class schedules and finds appropriate placement
- Monitor student progress and provide interventions where needed
😊 SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL SUPPORT
- Provides individual or small-group counseling for things like stress, anxiety, peer conflict, self-esteem, conflict resolution
- Encourage inclusion and positive peer interactions
- Teach coping skills and emotional regulation strategies
- Offer a safe, confidential space for all
🏫 SCHOOL-WIDE SUPPORT
- Deliver classroom lessons on topics such as career exploration, suicide prevention, respect, empathy, and emotional regulation
- Collaborate with teachers to support student needs in the classroom
- Participate in school-wide initiatives such as anti-bullying programs, kindness campaigns, college and career readiness activities
🤝 FAMILY COLLABORATION
- Communicate with parents/guardians about academic or social-emotional concerns
- Connect families with resources such as therapists, community programs, or other personal needs
- Work with teachers and administration to create supportive learning environments
🔮 FUTURE PLANNING
- Begin career exploration and goal setting
- Introduce students to CTE Pathways and high school readiness such as course planning and transition support
- Encourage curiosity about future careers and education
