What do counselors do?
That is a great question! Counselors are involved in all aspects of a student’s education. The counseling center is a safe environment and we encourage students to visit whenever they need emotional, social, or academic support. Counselors provide services in the following areas.
- INDIVIDUAL STUDENT PLANNING
7th and 8th graders will meet formally with their assigned counselor once per year during CCR meetings to review and discuss their current academic progress, upcoming course selections, four-year plan, graduation requirements, scholarship opportunities, academic and personal goals, career options, etc. Parents are invited and encouraged to attend this meeting with their student. 7th graders will meet briefly with their counselor at the beginning of the year to discuss transition to Jr. High, academic expectations, and an introduction to college and career planning.
- RESPONSIVE SERVICES
Students are encouraged to visit the counseling center for any concerns including; friends, suicidal thoughts, grief and loss, personal/social issues, concerns with classes or teachers, family issues, bullying, crisis situations, etc. We also encourage friends, teachers, administrators, and parents to refer students who may be struggling or who may benefit from counseling services. We are available throughout the day to help parents and students with any concerns.
- GUIDANCE CURRICULUM
We regularly visit the students in the classroom and organize events that allow students to explore and develop personal/social, life/career, multicultural, and academic/learning skills. This includes; Career Exploration lessons in the 7th grade CCA classes, Reality town in 8th grade, and Character Education (bullying, life skills, social skills, etc.).
