Don’t know what you want to do yet? Use YouScience (Career Aptitude)!

YouScience empowers students with aptitude-driven college and career readiness. This platform offers “brain games” that help students discover their natural aptitudes to direct them to relevant career and/or educational pathways!

  • All Skyline students have an account! Log in here with Brightpath.
  • If you are new or are still tied to a previous school, see Mrs. Oliver in the Career Center for help.

Apprenticeships

An apprenticeship is an arrangement where a student learns an art, trade, or job while under the supervision of a professional. Apprenticeships help students gain real-world experience in a field they are interested in! See the following links for leads or come to the Career Center with any questions!

  • Apprenticeship Utah – Apprenticeships
  • Salt Lake Community College – Apprenticeships
  • Salt Lake County: Office of Regional Development – Pre-Apprenticeships
  • U.S. Department of Labor – Apprenticeships
  • Utah Career Center – Apprenticeships
  • Utah Department of Workforce Services – Apprenticeships

Students in Granite School District also have the opportunity to take classes and get involved with apprenticeships through the Granite Technical Institute.

Workforce

Entering the workforce means getting a job straight out of high school instead of going to college, completing service, or joining the military. Start by finding a field you’re interested in, then look for entry-level positions and work your way up. Any apprenticeship or internship experience you have can also help you land a job. Use the websites below to start your job search:

  • Job Corps – Federal Job Training (local Clearfield branch)
  • Utah Department of Workforce Services – Job Board
  • Year Up United – Internship Opportunities
  • YouthBuild – Jobs in Construction
  • Open to working for the military? Check out military careers.

It is important to know how to start, build, and enhance your resumes. This will be beneficial when seeking job opportunities. See resume resources here (Google Document).

Military

There are six different branches of the military (Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Space Force, Coast Guard), all of which you can enlist into once you’ve graduated from high school. Here are the links to each military branch:

  • Air Force
    • Air Force: 1-800-423-USAF (1-800-423-8723)
    • Air Force Reserve: 1-800-257-1212
    • Air National Guard: 1-800-TO-GO-ANG (1-800-864-6264)
  • Army
    • Army and Army Reserve: 1-888-550-ARMY (1-888-550-2769)
    • Army National Guard: 1-800-GO-GUARD (1-800-464-8273)
  • Navy
    • Navy and Navy Reserve: 1-800-USA-NAVY (1-800-872-6289)
  • Marine Corps
    • Marine Corps and Marine Corps Reserve: 1-800-MARINES (1-800-627-4637)
  • Coast Guard

  • Space Force
    • Space Force: 1-800-423-USAF (1-800-423-8723)

Post High / GTSA (IEP)

Students who have an IEP may need more support services through vocational rehabilitation, disability services, and community programs. Use the following resources to help with job coaching, independent living skills, and college planning:

  • The Jones Center – Granite School District Transition Services & Individualized Vocational Training
  • Utah Department of Health & Human Services – Services for People with Disabilities
  • Utah Parent Center – Vocational Rehabilitation
  • Workforce Services Rehabilitation – Pre-Employment Transition Services

Service

Some students choose to do service projects after graduation to give themselves a break (gap-year) from school but still feel like they’re involved with something. Large service projects could also serve as a great filler on resumes if you plan on taking some time off in between graduation and your next steps. This shows future colleges and employers that you chose to participate in something during your time away. Some examples include the following:

  • AmeriCorps – Federal Service Program
  • Peace Corps – Volunteer Agency
  • United Planet – Shorter Alternative to Peace Corps
  • Utah Conservation Corps – Local AmeriCorps Branch
