Youngsters take to the kitchen in Future Chefs Challenge
Twenty-four fourth grade students, Oakwood’s own Kjell Worthington, donning white coats and black chef’s hats, filled the GEC Café kitchen to create their own healthy salad recipes in hopes of impressing the judges’ taste buds.
Participants in the Future Chefs Challenge had previously concocted their own unique salad dish that won him or her a spot in the district-level competition.
With the help of GTI Culinary Arts students and Granite lunch specialists, each student prepared their special dish in a professional kitchen – a unique opportunity not typically afforded to elementary-age students.
Judges considered taste, texture, presentation and use of featured ingredients such as black beans, chicken, mangos and sweet potatoes. The winner will go on to regional competition and, if selected, will recreate his/her recipe on a Future Chefs YouTube video where public voting will determine the national champion.
