Stephanie Ann Hopkins was born November 4, 1994 in Indianapolis, Indiana and was raised in Holladay, Utah less than two blocks from Olympus High. She graduated from Olympus High School in 2013 and attended the University of Utah. While in college, she participated in health research and service in Ghana and a month of service in India with YMAD. She graduated in 2017 with a degree in International Health and 2019 with a bachelor of Science in Nursing as a registered nurse. After completing a critical care internship, she worked as a critical care nurse at the University of Utah hospital in the neuro-critical care unit.
The mountains and desert of Utah were Steph’s therapy. On February 6, 2021 Stephanie escaped the stress of caring for critically ill COVID and neurological patients to ski in Millcreek Canyon where she was tragically killed in an avalanche in Wilson Glade with three other skiers.
Steph was selfless and nurturing, at times to her own detriment. A friend remembers challenging her on the topic: “Steph, you need to make sure you put on your own oxygen mask before you try to help others on the plane.” “She would listen, he stated, but I don’t think she ever knew what I was talking about.”
Most of us view the world centered around ourselves, Steph was able to view the world a little differently. She was a little less central on her views of the universe. Steph spent a lot of her days more concerned with the well being of others than her own.
Steph participated in the Community of Caring class and service projects at Olympus High. She worked with special needs kids with “Eagle Eyes” and it moved her and it helped set her on a path of service and love.
We hope this scholarship will help you earn an education and enter a life of service to other people and learn to “love like Steph.”
With love, the Hopkins (Nathan, Adeline, Alex, Andrew, Scott and Katy)
