What is an internship?
Internships enable students to take what they’ve learned in their school work and apply the knowledge and skills in the workplace.
Student interns take a semester long pass/fail class which allows them to explore a career in depth. This program requires students to complete:
- 40 hours at the internship site
- Course work, where they will build a LinkedIn account, create a resume and participate in mock interviews
- A PowerPoint presentation as the final project, which will be presented at the junior high schools
Who is eligible for internships?
Any Junior or Senior can complete an internship if they have taken at least two classes in the area that they are interested in. Students should begin talking to Jenny Zachry, Work-Based Learning Specialist, their Sophomore year to ensure they have taken the necessary classes to get an internship.
When are internships done?
Internships can be done during the school day as a class period. Or, they can also be done after school. Students will still receive academic credit for internships done outside of the school day as long as they have gone through the application and placement process with the Work-Based Learning Specialist.
Where can students intern?
We will work with the student to find a business or organization that matches their interests. Internships are throughout the Salt Lake City area. If you have a place in mind, please bring the contact information to our Work-Based Learning Specialist and we will work to get that business or organization approved to host interns.
