Churchill families,
Welcome to spring! I wanted to make you aware of a few items for this time of year:
Recognition
Congratulations to Ms. Perry on receiving the Region 5 PTA award for Outstanding Secondary Educator. We at Churchill agree that Ms. Perry is fabulous and deserving of this honorable recognition! We love you Ms. Perry!
Churchill on Broadway
Huge kudos to our Musical Theatre crew this year. Ms. Baguley really worked hard with the extra restrictions to make something powerful that also followed safety guidelines and boy did they pull it off! The video of our school musical will be available shortly on our website. Our actors, actresses, stage crew and all performers are amazing to see! The school will be watching our first airing of the play in an assembly this Thursday.
Electronic devices
Students are issued a one to one electronic device from the school. These are intended to promote educational outcomes. These devices are firewalled for safety and supervision. Students need to utilize school Chromebooks. Personal electronic devices outside of the school provided Chromebooks are not permitted.
Lunch time drop off and pick up
If your student needs lunch please bring it into the office before lunchtime. We have had a few delivering it to their students during lunch which makes it difficult to ensure we don’t have an unsafe situation with kids meeting an unknown car outside. Churchill is a closed campus which means students may not leave during the school day (lunch included) unless they have been issued a school street pass from the Counseling Center.
Testing
End of the year Rise Testing is going to be May 12th to the 27th. This year the test is strictly to understand where your student is in their learning progress. With all the variables this year it is extremely important to understand each student’s level. These test scores will not be used to give a school grade.
SRI Scores:
The third round of Scholastic Reading Inventory testing is well underway in our English classes. Please encourage your child to try their hardest on this assessment. All our teachers are supporting the reading growth by using common vocabulary and curriculum. The fall and winter scores showed how well this is working:
Fall SRI Scores | Winter SRI Scores |
Highly Proficient 46%, 264 studentsProficient 25%, 143 studentsStrategic at Risk 19%, 108 studentsIntensive at Risk 10%, 56 students | Highly Proficient 56%, 320 studentsProficient 24%, 135 studentsStrategic at Risk 13%, 71 studentsIntensive at Risk 7%, 42 students |
We increased our Highly Proficient students by 56 and we decreased our at risk students by 14! This is great progress!
We are continuing to monitor all our students and practices for impacts on learning outcomes.
4th quarter
The state is lessening some of the Covid-19 restrictions. 4th quarter we are opening up after school intramural sports that allow masks to be worn. We are also allowed to do in person assemblies and live performances. Masks and spacing is still expected. Overall, we are hoping to get things as normal as possible including end of year parties. We all need some parties right now! We will continue to inform you if other changes are being made to our overall Covid safety plan.
Intramurals:
Please watch our website for a more complete schedule but for now please be aware that Intramurals will be starting on April 5th.
April 5th- Morning workouts with Mr. Tate
April 6th- Team sports after school with Mr. Gunter (basketball)
April 7th- Morning workouts with Mr. Tate
April 8th- Team sports after school with Mr. Gunter (basketball)
Dogs on Leashes
Granite District has placed signs on all school campuses not allowing dogs to walk off leash and not being on campus during school hours for public and student safety reasons. Please feel free to use our campus to walk your dogs on leash but please do pick up after them!
Students need to bring a water bottle every day
We have had a few students forget their water bottles lately. Please remind your students to bring those. Covid restrictions have made it required that we only have water bottle fill stations not drinking fountains.
Distance learners:
We are pushing to have distance learners return to in person learning, 4th quarter. Please contact Mr. Hendricks and Mr. Peterson to talk about how to make that happen and if you have any questions or concerns.
