Spirit week was a success. The objective of spirit week is to connect and build Charger pride. Between the dance, our assemblies, our lunch time activities.. the student leaders nailed it!
On Monday we had activities in classrooms and assemblies to remind students of the character expectations in our A.R.I.S.E. expectations. The counselors tied into this theme with a presentation to our 6th graders about the importance of respect. The link to the presentation is below. It is filled with a powerful message and some great videos. Please use the presentation to create a conversation with your student about respect.

Welcome to spring! This week we celebrated our students of the month (Sophia Johnsen, Shauna Brickell, Henri Bigelow and Allison Nelson). These students exemplify the charger way by quiet kindness and respect to those around them.
The Orchestra, Choir and Jazz Bands put on a stellar performance and our talent show knocked our socks off by showcasing the immense talent that exists at Churchill.
Lastly, you may have seen our student officers this weekend on the news! Our school and community was recognized for the incredible money raised for Souper Bowl of Caring.
Behaviors: As the end of the year approaches we want to help each student achieve success understanding the behaviors that lead to strong outcomes. I wanted to make you aware of two things we are putting place to help our students:
- Tardy bells: On Monday April 8th, the school will start having tardy bells to help students arrive to class on time.
- Lunch detentions: Lunch detention is intended to help students reflect and change behaviors. In the previous letter I showcased our behavior plan that is designed to help students have several opportunities to reflect and change problematic behaviors before receiving consequences. Students that have three lunch detentions for the same behaviors will receive an overnight suspension. Overnight suspensions require a parent meeting before returning to school. This allows us to partner with you to develop a plan that will help your student succeed.
RISE: RISE testing is on its way. Please take a moment to complete the letter of support for your student before April 19th. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScnt4aBC0f_0zNvpOoOFeLgr2WGSvAYdGKDc3rGjXXkNPQ4_Q/viewform?usp=sf_link
Parents have the right to have their students opt out of RISE testing by completing the form linked below and returning it to Ms. Brimley in our office. This assessment is utilized to help you and your student understand their learning progression and our staff to develop the most comprehensive plan to help them achieve success. If you have questions about the assessment and how it is utilized please contact Mr. Hendricks or Mr. Schelble for more information. Link to Assessment opt out:
Student officer elections:

A huge shout out to our performers and stage crew students for their performance this week in the, “Little Mermaid.” It was a huge success. We are grateful for all those that attended and for our wonderful parents and partners who help make it a success! Kudos to our wrestlers competing in the wrestling tournament at Skyline this Saturday. Ethan Gay and Paul Tokhtuev got 2nd place in their weight categories. Go Chargers!
As we transition into Quarter 4 our focus is on ending the year strong both academically and behaviorally.
We hosted an assembly for each grade level on Monday to remind students of the charger characteristics that provide success. The focus this quarter is respect. Students show respect by coming to class on time, being prepared to learn, and giving their best effort in class by listening and paying attention to the lesson.
Our school behavior plan is set up so that when students are not following these characteristics they receive a warning. If this behavior still continues students receive two opportunities to reflect on this behavior to change it themselves by completing, “think time sheets”. These important steps allow students to think about why these actions are not producing the best learning outcomes and adopt a better strategy. If these behaviors continue afterwards then our teachers will contact parents to help support their students.
Our school dress code is also set up to provide respect. As the weather warms up, it’s natural for students to want to dress comfortably, but it’s important that their attire remains appropriate for the school environment. Our dress code is designed to maintain a positive and respectful atmosphere conducive to learning, and your cooperation in adhering to these guidelines is greatly appreciated.
Please take a moment to review the attached district dress code policy and guidelines on behavior expectations. https://schools.graniteschools.org/churchilljr/wp-content/uploads/sites/92/2023/11/2023-2024-CJHS-Student-Policies-and-Procedures.pdf
By adhering to these guidelines, we ensure that all students feel comfortable and respected in their learning environment. When it becomes necessary for us as a school to address dress code with students, we are committed to maintaining positive and respectful communication with students and their parents. We hope to have your support in reinforcing these expectations.
Lasty, Students will be showcasing their learning this quarter in the upcoming RISE testing. Students value your opinion and each year we have parents complete a letter of encouragement. Please take a quick moment to complete your letter encouraging your student to work their hardest on the RISE test. Letters need to be completed before April 19th. The link to complete the letter can be found here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScnt4aBC0f_0zNvpOoOFeLgr2WGSvAYdGKDc3rGjXXkNPQ4_Q/viewform?usp=sf_link
Thank you for your attention to these matters, and together, let’s make this Spring season a productive and enjoyable one for everyone at Churchill Junior High.

Churchill’s PTSA met this week. If you haven’t donated to the PTSA please do so. This amazing team works hard with every student. They create a unique opportunity for our student leaders to participate and make decisions as part of the team.
Our CCA students had a great time learning about the programs at the Salt Lake Community College today! We heard positive feedback about how much the students enjoyed the field trip and saw the programs that are offered.
Kudos to Derek Tate who got the MESA teacher of the year award! He has built a strong academic program with hands on learning! Also, Kudos to Mr. Leafty and our custodians for getting top marks on cleanliness. Lastly, huge Kudos to our students and teachers. Next Tuesday we get the traveling trophy for highest median growth in the district. Churchill also got the highest proficiency. This means that not only do we grow our students to the highest level, but we grow every student. Churchill and Eastwood Elementary are the only two schools to get both trophies. Please feel free to come and give a holler of love at our board meeting if you can, 7pm at the Granite School District office.

Dear Churchill Junior High School Community,
Firstly, a huge congratulations to our boys and girls volleyball teams for their outstanding straight set victories over Bennion on Monday It was truly a fantastic way to conclude the season, and I couldn’t be prouder of their hard work and dedication.
Additionally, I am delighted to report that our student leaders had the opportunity to witness firsthand where and how the generous $45,000 donation from our community is directly benefiting Granite School families through food and services. Their participation in this meaningful initiative reflects our school’s commitment to service and compassion.
I am also thrilled to share that our student leaders are actively engaged in our PTSA meetings, providing invaluable leadership advice to ensure Churchill continues to thrive. Their dedication to shaping the future of our school is truly commendable.
Furthermore, I’m excited to announce that this coming Friday, our students will enjoy an hour-long lunch, which they have rightfully earned. As part of the festivities, both Mr. Schelble and I have volunteered to receive a pie in the face.
The Charger swag store will be remaining open until Monday the 19th. This is a fantastic opportunity to show your school spirit and grab some stylish Churchill gear! You can access the store through this link: Churchill Swag Store.
Additionally, I am excited to announce that Churchill Junior High has achieved remarkable success this year. Not only did we receive the traveling trophy for the highest Proficiency overall, but we are also being honored with the traveling trophy for the highest proficiency gain. This incredible achievement is shared only with Eastwood, highlighting our commitment to fostering growth and excellence at all levels within our school community.
At Churchill, we pride ourselves on nurturing the potential of every student, ensuring that they not only reach high levels of achievement but also experience significant growth along their educational journey.
As we look ahead to the upcoming week, I want to reassure you that it promises to be a bit more relaxed after the hustle and bustle of recent activities. Friday will be our much-anticipated hour long lunch, providing students with a well-deserved break and a chance to unwind.
Finally, I would like to remind you that March 15th marks the end of the term. Please ensure that all necessary assignments and assessments are completed by this date to ensure a successful conclusion to the term.
Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our school community. Together, we are making a positive difference in the lives of our students.

Charger families,
Churchill has set up a store where you can purchase Churchill swag. This will close on February 16th. The link to the store can be found here: Churchill Swag.
What a week at Churchill!. Lego robotics League competed on Saturday at Granger. Both teams had an excellent performance. The animatronics creators were ranked 7th in the robot games. The master chargers ranked 4th in the robot games and won the overall champion award for the Granite School District competition. I am so proud of these teams! The Master Chargers will move on to Weber State on the 24th of February.
Parent conferences were a great success! Thanks for those that attended. Please reach out to teachers or staff if you ever have questions at any time.
Our Girls and Boys lost against Evergreen yesterday in Volleyball but kudos to a great season.
Souper Bowl of caring has one more full day left. We have a matching donor that will fund up to $2,000 for money donated today. We are so proud of our Wasatch and Churchill communities. This has never been about the competition, and the money raised through this fun rivalry has been overwhelming. That said, the competition with Wasatch ends tomorrow at 5:00 PM.
Kudos to our student leaders and PTA for making this happen. A good Charger side story is one student, Kolby Green, who is not a student leader, asked his parents all on his own if they could go purchase a poster board so he could put the QR code for the Souper Bowl of Caring on it. He went out every morning before school started, on his own, in the rain and campaigned for the good cause. Now how cool is that?
Have a great weekend! A reminder there is no school tomorrow.
Mr. Hendricks

Charger families,
It is all about Churchill pride this month! Souper bowl of caring, Lego robotics, Science fair, Volleyball, Parent conferences we got a lot of ways to show Churchill love. To celebrate Churchill has set up a store where you can purchase Churchill swag. This will close on February 16th. The link to the store can be found here: Churchill Swag.
Congratulations to both the boys and girls volleyball teams for their wins over Granite Park on Monday.
Boys and girls lost against Bonneville on Wednesday but their tenacity, teamwork and strong sportsmanship is winning in all domains.
Congratulations to all who competed in the district science fair! Churchill represented nearly half of the district in the Middle school category (16 of our 29 projects selected to go to the regional fair in the Junior division 7/8th grades are from Churchill!). The names of the winners and results can be found here:https://sites.google.com/granitesd.org/gsdscience/stem-fair#h.a3ikonbyg8dc
Souper Bowl of Caring
We currently stand at 5,330 dollars raised! Go Chargers! Next week is our big push to increase our donation amount. Please check your email for more information. Students can bring money to their advisory class on Monday for a chance to win an in school competition for a root beer float. We are competing with Wasatch this year but ultimately this friendly competition is focused on our efforts to raise money for needy families in Granite School District. I would encourage you to reach out to friends and families to donate for this great cause.
Your student’s message in this email should contain their goal based on their RISE score. Advisory teachers had students reflect on how they performed on last year’s RISE test and using that data set a goal for this year’s RISE. We wanted you to have this for Parent conferences to facilitate a conversation with teachers and your students. Advisory teachers will be spending time this quarter and next coaching on strong study and test taking strategies. I encourage you to also talk to your student on ways to be successful academically.

Dear Churchill Junior High Community,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to express my deepest gratitude for the tremendous support and enthusiasm displayed by our community during the recent Churchill on Parade open house. Your assistance in advertising and the overwhelming turnout made the event a resounding success. We received positive feedback from attendees, and it was heartening to witness the strong sense of community that Churchill Junior High embodies. Your collective efforts truly made a difference, and we are grateful for the unwavering support you continue to provide.
I am pleased to share that this week, we had the honor of hosting the superintendent, who commended our students for their outstanding performance on the RISE assessments. Churchill Junior High stood out at the district level, achieving top rankings in both proficiency and growth. In comparison to other junior highs across the state, our students’ achievements are truly commendable.
Our pride extends beyond academic excellence to the remarkable efforts of our student leaders. They not only organized and supported Churchill on Parade but also played a crucial role in the success of today’s PEP assembly. The assembly was a celebration of our students’ past accomplishments and a reflection of the pride we take in pushing ourselves to new heights. We are beyond proud of each and every student at Churchill Junior High. Your dedication, hard work, and commitment to excellence are the driving forces behind our success. As we look back with pride, we are also excited about the future and the limitless potential our students possess.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I love the culture of food, family, fun and just sitting back and breathing… and I love gratitude and what it provides in our lives. I am beyond grateful for this job where I get to connect with our incredible students. It is so fun and your students make me better daily. Thank you and thanks to our incredible teachers and staff for helping them succeed. This is a great time to share the gift of gratitude. Teachers love to hear a thank you from a student. Taking a moment to promote how much of an impact a thank you can have for your student and their teacher can go a long way.

I have to admit I am always so sad to have to put Halloween away. There is almost nothing better than a day of students in costumes and hopefully you saw our teachers all dressed in their best Barbie versions on our social media. Although it makes for an overall exhausting day it is mostly because it is so fun and makes such a great sense of community.

Chargers have some mad spirit! Student leaders created a great week celebrating Charger Pride. The hats, pajamas, lunch time games and especially the dance all added up to creating pride in our Charger community. Our counselors kicked off the week by showcasing why school spirit matters in this presentation: school spirit video. Please watch our Instagram for pics of the week.
Students who had shown respect this past month were recognized at our Graduate of Granite characteristics BBQ. They and a friend attended a BBQ in our courtyard with games and good chill vibes.
This week I wanted to highlight our behavior system P.B.I.S (Positive behavior intervention support). This system utilizes behavior strategies and shared procedures for helping students be successful. A part of this program is centered around our token incentive program. Students can receive a Charger Check for good behaviors and then cash those in as real money that can be used to purchase items in our Charger Check store on Fridays. This time of year we see a trend in behaviors slipping a little especially in the area of respect. It’s a great time to talk to your student about how behaviors matter as much as grades and talk to them about ways to be respectful.

Churchill is an amazing place. You can be assured that every staff member cares about your student and your family. Churchill is among the top schools in the state for Math, Science, and English scores. The school’s art, musical and drama programs are legendary. Our sports program has a tradition of not just winning but building strong character. Churchill is also a career pathways school for Engineering. We have Dungeons and Dragons, robotics, debate, and Mesa clubs- bottom line there is a place for every student to grow and belong in our building.
Now please resume your regularly scheduled summer fun and know that we got you covered for the new school year.

I got this amazing email from our bus driver this week about Tomas Mason:
On Friday our (Churchill/Eastwood) bus was involved in an accident. As the driver I spend a lot of time getting on and off the bus. Checking on kids dealing with police and stuff from my supervisor. Without asking or even mentioning anything to Tommy. He took charge of little kids on the bus. Keeping them calm, making sure they stayed in their seats. Didn’t allow a ton of yelling in the bus. Made sure they were being appropriate.
I didn’t know any of this happened until Monday afternoon taking the kids home. After he got off the bus, a few of the elementary school kids were talking about him. And I asked them what they were talking about. And they explained everything that Tommy was doing on Friday. And it brought tears to my eyes as I was driving them home.
Tommy has truly become an amazing human! Watching him grow up over the last four years has been a highlight of my career! Tommy will be a kid that sticks in my mind and for the rest of my life! I’m excited to see where the next four years go for him.
Tommy, thank you for being you!

Term 3 has started out strong. We are grateful for our Volleyball coaches who have started our intramurals for both boys and girls. Churchill’s open house was a success. We met many wonderful students and families, had amazing labs and project based learning and our performing arts students wowed our incoming students. We are grateful for our PTSA for organizing the event and also for delivering pizza for our birthdays this month. I cannot say enough what a force for good is for our school. If you haven’t yet please join this great organization. A reminder that our open enrollment window is still open until February 3rd so please continue to let families and friends know we would be happy to give them a tour if interested.
Quarter 3 is important for student success. I wanted to take a moment to illustrate our school goals and how these impact student outcomes.
Goal # 1- Student self reported grades or student expectations:
John Hattie, educational researcher, shows that this focus area could lead to nearly 3 years growth in one year. Essentially this strategy is centered on students’ metacognition where they take the driver’s seat in their learning. The idea is that students look at upcoming standards or assessments, predict what they can achieve on their assessment and then lay out a plan to achieve this goal. The reason this strategy is so effective is it builds intrinsic capacity in students. This focus can not only have an impact on this year’s learning but lifelong learning. At the core of this strategy is to push students to achieve beyond their own expectations. When they do this, studies show students build strong capacity in their learning habits and self knowledge.
What can parents do to help their students in this area? Each week use the goals your student has set below to create a conversation. Ask questions, such as, “Tell me more about why you think this is the score you predict you will get? What would you have to do to improve your chances of even going farther? What are the steps you think you need to take to get there?” A few minutes of time can produce powerful results. Here is a 2 minute video of John Hattie explaining what this learning strategy looks and sounds like. Even though geared to teachers it gives a solid explanation of this strategy: https://vimeo.com/41465488
