Absences
Good school attendance results in increased student achievement. Regular and prompt attendance is expected in every class. Excessive absences and/or tardiness can affect both academic and citizenship grades. There are four types of absences:
- School Excused Absences (R): The R indicates the student has been released from class for a school activity. These absences do not affect citizenship and make-up work will be allowed.
- Unexcused Absences (A): The A indicates that the student has missed one or more classes and the absence has not been excused. Make-up work may not be provided for unexcused absences. If a pattern of poor attendance develops, parents will be notified by phone or letter. If the attendance problem persists, the administration may request a parent/student conference. Sluffing is considered an unexcused absence (U). Make-up work will not be provided.
- Excused Absences (E): The E indicates the student has been absent and that absence has been excused by the parent with a note or a phone call to the school. Excused absences include illness, medical emergencies, medical or dental appointments that cannot be scheduled outside of the school time, funerals and religious holy days. If a medical note is provided, the absence will be changed to an (M) for medical. The administration may grant special requests for extenuating circumstances if arrangements are made in advance. On the seventh day of absence a doctor’s note may be required each subsequent absence.
- Suspensions (S): Suspensions affect the citizenship grade the same as unexcused absences. Teachers are not required to provide make-up work if a student is suspended. Therefore, make up work is on a teacher to teacher basis.
Procedure for Excusing Absences
Parents should call the attendance office at (385) 646-5145 to report an absence at the beginning of the day. Calls taken after 12:00 pm may not be marked as excused in time and parents may still receive a phone call from the Granite District Attendance Line.
Assemblies
Assemblies are scheduled throughout the year. Students are expected to sit with their assigned ADVISORY CLASS. Students are expected to behave in accordance with the P.B.I.S. Behavior Matrix for the auditorium. No use of phones, IPods, or other electronic devices during assemblies or they will be confiscated. Show appreciation through applause. At the conclusion of the assembly students should remain seated until dismissed. Students are expected to attend assemblies with their class. If a student will be checking out of school during the assembly their parent must come into the counseling to check out their student.
Attendance/Truancy Policy
The mission of the Granite School District is to prepare every student with the knowledge and skills needed for lifelong success. Students who are excessively absent from school are not able to accomplish their educational goals.
According to the Utah Compulsory Attendance Laws (Utah Code 53A-11-101-105), parents and students are responsible for regular school attendance. Occasionally a student must be absent from school for reasons which are acceptable to the school and the courts such as illness, medical appointment, family emergency, death of a family member or close friend. Please note the following:
- Seven or more days (or equivalent class periods) of absence within a school year is considered excessive. A medical note will be required for 8 or more absences in order for the absences to be excused.
- After five or more days (or equivalent class periods) of excused absences within a school year, a truancy letter will be mailed home as a warning of consequences for further truancy. Students must be in attendance 4 hours of a school day to receive credit for one full day.
- After 12 days (or equivalent class periods) of unexcused absences within a school year the school will mail a certified letter to the home. This letter requires the student and parent to appear at a Pre-Court hearing.
- Students in the 7th through 9th grades will be referred to the Third District Juvenile Court.
- Students in the 9th through 12th grades are subject to the Granite School District’s Citizenship Policy. Students with two or more unexcused absences will receive a “0” in citizenship. Students are required to maintain a 2.0 CPA in order to graduate from high school. Excessive absences may jeopardize a student’s ability to graduate from high school.
Backpacks, Cinch Sacks and Bags
Bicycles/Scooters/Skateboards
Bicycles and scooters should be locked in the bicycle rack during the school day. Skateboards can be used for transportation to and from school must be kept in the locker during the school day. If the item does not fit in your locker you may bring it to the office where it will be stored until after school. The above mentioned items may not be used on school grounds. Violations of this policy may result in confiscation of the item with the parent/guardian being required to pick up the confiscated item from the school administration.
Books
At the beginning of each school year students are assigned textbooks. These textbooks have been bar-coded and are checked out to students through the library. At the end of each school year students will return their textbooks to the library. Fines will be assessed for lost or damaged books. Textbooks are extremely expensive to replace. YOU are responsible for textbooks checked out to YOU. Please keep books in good condition and do not loan them out or leave them lying around.
Change of Information
Please notify the counseling center 385-646-5145 if there are any changes in address and/or phone numbers. We need to be able to contact parents in case of accident/emergency.
Citizenship Policy
Satisfactory Citizenship is a graduation requirement in Granite School District. This includes behavior, attendance, punctuality, and adherence to rules and policies of the school. Students are required to earn a minimum 2.0 cumulative CPA (Citizenship Point Average) on a 4.0 scale. The citizenship grading policy for Churchill Jr. High is as follows:
CPA | Tardies | Absences | Behavior |
4 | 0-1 | Less
than 8 |
Participates appropriately; shows self-discipline, effort and positive attitude; is accountable for make-up of work missed; follows class rules. |
3 | 2 | Less
than 8 |
Usually demonstrates similar attitude and behavior as above, is accountable for absences and make up of work missed; usually follows class rules. |
2 | 3 | 8+
excused |
Shows average participation, self-discipline, effort and accountability for absences; needs to be reminded to follow school rules. |
1 | 4 | 1 unexcused
or suspension |
Participates infrequently, shows little self-discipline, effort, positive attitude or accountability for absent work; needs frequent reminders to follow class rules. |
0 | 5+ | 2+ unexcused or suspensions | Shows no desire to participate, shows little self-discipline, effort or accountability for making up absent work; needs daily reminders to follow class rules, or incidence of cheating. |
If a student disputes a citizenship grade, it must be resolved with the issuing teacher within two weeks of the date the report card is issued.
Closed Campus
Students are not permitted to leave the school grounds during school hours, during lunch or during assemblies for any reason unless they are on a school approved field trip or the student has been properly checked out by a parent and a street pass has been issued.
Counseling Center
Churchill counselors follow the Utah Comprehensive Counseling and Guidance model. Counselors assist students with registration, scheduling classes, social interaction strategies, and problem solving.
Another major responsibility of the counselor is to prepare each student and parent with a Career and College Awareness Plan. The CCAP incorporates student information and competencies in areas of self-knowledge, educational and occupational exploration and educational career and life-planning. A successful CCAP is a cooperative effort of student, parent, and counselor to monitor and manage student educational and career development. During CCAP meetings with students and parents, counselors incorporate different career exploration activities, interest inventories, and learning style assessments. Educational planning, graduation requirements, interpretation of test scores, career interest inventories and career planning are just a few of the topics discussed in the required meetings for each grade level.
Mr. Marchant is the counselor for students with a last name of A-K.
Mrs. Pasker is the counselor for students with a last name L-Z.
Dances
Dances are scheduled throughout the year and are after school from 2:45-4:00. Students attending dances are expected to adhere to all school policies. Students who dance or act inappropriately will be asked to leave and may not be allowed to attend the next dance.
Detention
Students are assigned lunch detention or after school detention for excessive tardies, teacher referrals, infractions of school policy, etc. Students assigned detention will be called to the office to schedule their detention and to call home to notify parents. If the student fails to show for an assigned detention, an additional detention will be assigned. If the student fails to show a second time, they will be referred to administration and may be assigned an In School Suspension (ISS) or suspended from school. For assigned lunch detentions, students will eat their lunch in the office and then help clean cafeteria tables the last 10 minutes of lunch.
Discipline
There are consequences set in place when students fail to comply with school rules and expectations. Parents are contacted, and, if necessary, district and local police may be contacted as well. Carefully review the following:
Continued
- Disrespect to an administrator, teacher, substitute teacher, staff member, and/or other students/guests will not be tolerated. These acts may result in suspension.
- Stealing is a crime and will not be tolerated. Acts of theft will be referred to the school resource officer and the student may be suspended from school.
- Full restitution will be required of any student who commits any form or vandalism. Acts of vandalism may result in suspension.
- Gambling of any nature is prohibited.
- Foul or obscene language will not be tolerated. Students will be given detention and a possible suspension followed by a parent conference before the student can return to school.
- Cheating or the appearance of cheating will not be tolerated. Cheating may include but is not limited to using another student’s work as your own, incorrect scoring of papers, plagiarizing, assisting others in completing assignments without doing the work, or using electronic devices during assignments or tests. Consequences for cheating are up to the individual teacher and may include academic and citizenship penalties such as a zero on the assignment and a 0 in citizenship.
Dress Code
The school dress code applies to ALL students. District policy mandates that dress be stylish, modest, and clean. How you dress not only advertises YOU, but your school and community as well. It is necessary to set a school climate that reflects our goals of academic excellence and a Community of Caring school. The administration reserves the right to determine if a student’s dress is inappropriate. Students in violation of the dress code will be referred to the administration and students will be asked to call home for a change of clothes.
- Shirts No tank tops, halter tops, tube tops, bare midriffs or backless shirts. All shirts must have cap sleeves where there are no shoulders showing. No sheer or lacey materials that expose skin or undergarments (including straps). Nothing with profanity, suggestive or sexual connotations, gang affiliation, drugs, tobacco, alcohol, or those depicting illegal acts.
- Skirts, Shorts, Dresses Must be 1” longer than the longest finger when arms are put down to the side. No short shorts such as bike shorts, pajama shorts, work-out shorts, running shorts etc.
- Pants No holes that expose undergarments. No low-riding where undergarments can be seen.
- Shoes Close toed shoes are preferred.

Drugs and Alcohol Policy
Granite School District – Article VIII.B.7
- Statement of Purpose
The Board recognizes the hazards of illegal drug use and, in agreement with state and federal laws, prohibits the illegal use, possession, distribution, sale or being under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances or intoxicants of any kind by students. Violations also include student use, possession, distribution or sale of drug paraphernalia, imitation controlled substances, or resorting where illegal drugs are being used or possessed. This policy covers all Granite District schools, school grounds, school sanctioned activities and when students are being transported in vehicles dispatched by Granite District.
The Board requires the development and implementation of educational programs that will have a positive effect upon student values, provide information on the harmful effects of alcohol and other drugs, and aid in the prevention of use of those substances.
The Board supports and encourages programs that coordinate school and parent cooperation in attempting to prevent substance abuse and encourages parents and guardians to seek school, public, or outside professional help for students who become involved with alcohol or drug abuse.
The regulations which shall guide the enforcement of this policy (Administrative
Memorandum No. 95) shall be in keeping with applicable laws. Disciplinary action, independent of court action, will be taken in cases involving students found in violation of District policy. For more detailed information on the Granite District Alcohol and Other Drugs Policy see the Granite School District 2016-2017 Information Packet that was mailed to each household.
Electronic Devices
Electronic devices should be left at home. We realize situations may arise when parents and students need to contact each other during school time. A telephone is available in the counseling center for student use, and parents should call the counseling center if they need to talk with their student during the school day. The school cannot be held responsible if items are lost or stolen while at school. If these items are brought to school, they should not be visible except during the lunch period. This includes earbuds.
1st Offense | Item logged & kept in office. Student can pick up after school. |
2nd Offense | Item logged & kept in office for parent pick up. |
3rd Offense | Item logged & kept in office for parent pick up. Student assigned after school detention and may not bring the item to school unless it is checked into the office before school begins. |
4th Offense | Item logged & kept in office for parent pick up. Parent & student meeting scheduled. Possible suspension. |
Each subsequent offense may result in suspension and parent conference before the student can return to school. |
Emergency Procedures
Fire, earthquake, and lockdown drills are conducted at different times throughout the year. Students will be instructed on, and practice, proper evacuation to be utilized in the event on an emergency.
During and/or following any emergency, every effort will be made to keep the school open and the students at school until the regular closing time. This is assuming that the building is habitable. The school has sufficient rooms with outside light. Students are safer at school than they would be on their own. If the building is not habitable, the public service announcement will state where the students have been moved.
We strongly recommend that parents have and review with their student a family plan to deal with emergency situations. Staff will be on duty at school to supervise and will remain at school until the scheduled dismissal time or until all students have been released to parents. Bus students will be transported as usual unless otherwise announced on a Public Service Radio Station. Any civil emergency instructions that are broadcast for our area will take precedence over this policy. An emergency booklet is in each classroom as is a posted evacuation plan.
Fighting, Hazing, Harassment
Fighting, hazing, or harassment of any kind will not be tolerated at school, while traveling to and from school, on any school bus, or at any school event. The penalty for involvement in a fight (which is defined as an exchange of physical contact such as hitting, slapping, punching, shoving, kicking, pushing) will result in a 1-3 day suspension from school. A conference with the parents of each student suspended is required before a student can come back to school, and students will be referred to the Granite School District’s Safe School Program.
Continued
Students who are intimidated or harassed by others should report it to the office immediately. Students who attend a fight or encourage a fight will be subject to disciplinary action including suspension. Students may also be referred to the school resource officer and subject to criminal proceedings.
Food, Gum, Candy, Drinks
Food is not allowed outside the cafeteria. Students may carry bottled water. We are unable to issue refunds for money or product that is lost when using a vending machine. Use vending machines at your own risk.
Grades/Attendance Online
Parents and students can create their own log in to check student grades and attendance online. Follow these easy directions.
1 You will need the student’s school ID# and date of birth before you begin.
2 Go to https://schools.graniteschools.org/churchilljr.
3 Click on Gradebook.
4 Create a new account or log in with your user name and password if you have already created an account.
Hall Passes
Any student in the hall during class time MUST have a hall pass. Each teacher has a black clipboard hall pass. Teachers must sign the hall pass when the student leaves and again when they return. If students come to the counseling center or office without a hall pass they will be sent back to the classroom to obtain one. This also prevents students from getting marked absent when roll is taken.
Homework
Homework is the preparation of work to be completed outside of the classroom. The assignment of homework is an important part of the instructional program at Churchill and should be considered a part of every student’s day. Good study habits are important in getting homework done in a timely and effective manner. Here are a few suggestions:
- Plan ~ Assign a specific time for study at home. Keep your student planner updated and take home all necessary books, papers, etc. to complete homework.
- Place ~ Have a designated place at home to study with all necessary materials available. Do not study while the TV is on or when talking to friends.
- Procedure ~ Be certain you understand the assignment when the teacher assigns it. Read the entire assignment before you begin. Reread any parts of the assignment that you need to know in more depth.
Honor Roll
High honor roll is 3.8 or above. Honor roll is 3.5 to 3.799. Students who make the high honor roll will receive a high honor roll card at the end of each term as well as an ice cream social in the cafeteria the last 10 minutes of the school day.
Injuries
Students injured at school should immediately report it to the teacher. The injury also needs to be reported to the counseling center so that an injury report can be completed. If the student requires immediate medical attention the report will be completed when the student returns to school. It is important for the office to have the most current information for every student on file so parents can be reached in case of emergency.
Internet Use Agreement
Students may access the Internet from school for teacher-directed activities. All students must complete the online Interest Use Agreement when they first log into the system.
Leaders
Class office elections for all grades are held in the fall. Student Body Office and Cheerleader elections are held in the spring of the preceding school year. To be eligible to run for office, students must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA and CPA for the three terms prior to eligibility deadlines.
Library
The library is open for students 20 minutes before school, during lunch, and 20 minutes after school. Students are expected to work quietly. Fines will be assessed for late returns or damaged books. Students must pay for lost books and may not check out additional books until fines have been paid.
Lockers
The school provides lockers at no cost. Lockers are the property of the school and are subject to search at any time. Unauthorized items will be removed. Students should keep their combination confidential. Do NOT share your locker OR combination with friends! Students who damage lockers will be held accountable, and fines may be assessed. Magnets or clips may be used to hold school appropriate pictures. Do not use tape, glue, or anything similar. Do not write on the inside or outside of lockers. The school is not responsible for items lost or stolen from school.
Loitering
Students are expected to leave the campus after school is out each day. Exceptions will be made for those students attending homework club, intramurals, school authorized clubs or activities that are under the direct supervision of a teacher.
Lost and Found
The lost and found is located in the office. Due to limited space, all items in the lost and found items will be given to a charity at the end of each quarter.
Make-up Work
When a student misses school it is the responsibility of the student to check with teachers when they return to school to see what work was missed. Students can also check CANVAS for missed assignments. For extended absences that are planned in advance, it is the responsibility of the student to check with each teacher to get any work that will be missed. A pre-approval form for planned absences in excess of five school days is available on line on the Churchill Web Page under Links.
Meals
Breakfast: $1.05 Served daily from 7:00-7:40 am

Churchill has a computerized lunch program and each student will be assigned a lunch pin number. It is important that these pin numbers be kept confidential. Each pin number is allowed one breakfast and one lunch per day. All students eat lunch in the cafeteria. Food and drink is not allowed outside the cafeteria. When weather permits, students may be excused to go out on the south lawn after they have finished lunch. Students are required to clean up their own lunch and dispose of utensils, trays, garbage, etc. in the proper place. Students who fail to demonstrate appropriate lunchroom behavior and clean up after themselves will be assigned a lunch detention.
Medication
Self-Administered
Students may retain and self-administer prescription or non-prescription medications subject to the following:
- Medication is taken only as prescribed.
- Medication is not sold, shared, or otherwise given to others.
- Only the dose needed for the school day may be brought to school.
- Injectable medications must be transported to and from school by a responsible adult and must be kept in a locked area in the office.
Continued
School-Administered
All prescription and non-prescription medications shall be:
- Accompanied by written parental consent. Forms available in school office.
- Accompanied by current written orders from the student’s physician, dentist, nurse practitioner, or physician’s assistant. Orders must state the student name, medication, dose, route and time of administration.
- In a pharmacy or manufacturer labeled container.
- Kept in a locked area in the office.
Distribution of medication (prescription or non-prescription) from one student to another violates the Granite School District Drug and Alcohol Policy. Students will be subject to disciplinary actions if this policy is violated.
Memory Book
Memory books may be purchased at the beginning of the school year (highly recommended) when registration fees are paid. The cost is $20. The deadline for purchasing a memory book is Friday, December 16, 2016. After this deadline has passed we can no longer take orders for memory books. Sometimes we do have a few extra at the end of the year that we can sell but this is not always an option.
Report Cards
Quarter grades are final grades and are placed in the student’s permanent record. An “I” incomplete grade can be given if a student is unavoidably absent from school and can be changed to a letter grade providing that make up work is completed within the time allowed. All incomplete grades automatically turn to an “F” grade after 2 weeks. If a student disputes an academic or citizenship grade, it must be resolved with the issuing teacher within two weeks after the report card has been issued.

Sexual Harassment
Granite District Policy on Sexual Harassment in Schools
The policy guidelines are taken from Granite District Board Policy. For more information, contact the Policy and Compliance Office at 385-646-4009. Granite School District is committed to providing in each school a safe, orderly environment where students, staff, parents, and all other people are treated with courtesy and respect. Any form of sexual harassment by staff, students, or others, including any inappropriate verbal, written, or physical conduct as defined below, is strictly prohibited. This does include online activities that affect the school safety or learning. Violators of this policy will subject themselves to investigative and disciplinary procedures and may involve police action.
Sexual harassment is defined as:
- any verbal, written, or physical conduct of a sexual nature which has the purpose or effect of creating an intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment or unreasonably interferes with a person’s work or academic performance.
- any suggestion, request, demand, or pressure for sexual involvement, accompanied by an implied or explicit threat concerning one’s grades, extracurricular standing, job, etc.
Sexual harassment includes, but is not limited to, the following:
- derogatory, demeaning, or offensive jokes, teasing, or comments of a sexual nature
- graphic remarks or sexual comments about an individualʼs body
- sexually suggestive or obscene telephone calls, letters, notes, or invitations
- sexually suggestive or obscene pictures, cartoons, posters, or objects
- grabbing, pinching, or touching of private areas
- deliberate cornering, shouldering, or bumping in hallways
- sexual gestures, unwanted pats or hugs, any inappropriate touching
- any form of sexual threat, intimidation, or exploitation
- actual or attempted sexual assault, molestation, or rape
- sexist remarks or gender-based stereotyping
- offensive physical pranks, such as pantsing of students
What to do if you are sexually harassed:
- If you believe you are being sexually harassed, you should consider telling the person that you do not like what is happening and you want it stopped. In many cases your clear statement that you want something stopped will be enough to take care of the situation. You are not required, however, to confront the person in this way.
- You have the right and are encouraged to report the problem immediately to the administrator at your school. You should not feel embarrassed, intimidated, or reluctant to file a harassment report. You will not be subject to retaliation or “put on trial” for doing so.
Anyone (student, staff member, parent, volunteer, or anyone else) who is a victim of sexual harassment, or who has personal knowledge of sexual harassment taking place, is encouraged to report the problem immediately to the administrator at the school. It is the responsibility of all staff members who have received information, allegations, or even rumors about sexual harassment, to report the problem immediately to the principal.
Street Passes
It is preferred that parents come into the building to check out their student when they need to leave school during the school day. Students may bring a note to the attendance office before the school day begins. The note must be signed by the parent and include a phone number where the parent can be reached. If we are unable to reach a parent for street pass verification, a street pass will not be issued. When the student has been issued a street pass they should show it to their teacher at the beginning of class so the teacher is aware that the student will need to leave class early. Students may only leave with their parent/guardian or others previously designated by parents on the school computer system.
Student Drop Off/Pick Up
Student pick up and drop off should take place in parking lot to the west of the school. The north side of the school is designated as a bus zone. The north east faculty parking lot should not be used to drop off or pick up students. Students should use crosswalks where provided. Please use the appropriate procedures as your child’s safety is paramount at Churchill.
Tardy Policy
Students are expected to arrive at school on time and to be in class when the tardy bell rings. Teachers expect students to be in their assigned seat when the tardy bell rings. Most teachers will start class with a warm-up activity such as a short quiz or a board exercise. These activities are part of the student’s grade. Students who are late to class will miss out on the points given for these activities. The tardy policy is as follows:
# Tardies | Grade | Consequence |
0-1 | 4 | In class consequence assigned by teacher |
2 | 3 | In class consequence assigned by teacher, phone call to parent |
3 | 2 | Student assigned lunch detention OR after school detention |
4 | 1 | Referral to administration and assigned 45 minute detention |
5+ | 0 | Referral to administration and assigned In-School-Suspension |
Telephone Use
A telephone is provided for student use and is located in the counseling center. Students are to use the school phone when they are sick or needing to contact parents during the school day.
Due to limited space, not all rules and consequences are included in the student planner; however, the administration reserves the right to give consequences for inappropriate student behavior.
